This is the 2nd time I posted this question and the last time I got a lot of rude remarks like "mcdonalds burger flipper" so if you feel like saying something not at all helpful, just keep it to yourself please. I'm being serious here.

I am getting my associates degree in general studies with an emphasis in social and behavioral sciences (yah I know a long name but my school doesnt offer an AA in psychology. thats what they said to major in if one wants a bachelors in psych. just some background info...) at the end of this semester and although I want more than anything to move on and get my BA and then my MA, I am not sure if I can because for some reason, even though my parents income exceeds the limit requirements, fafsa doesnt seem to take into account mortgage and bills and car insurance that make us nearly broke every month so I dont qualify for anything. I have tried applying for scholarships but never been granted anything so anyway, money is just my problem and I am trying to avoid loans where ever possible. so if I do have to settle at least for now with an Associate's degree, what kind of jobs can I do? I have been told that those who hire psych majors are like schools, correctional facilities, mental hospitals, etc. but is there anything I can do with my AA?
and If it helps to know, my ultimate goal is to be a grief counselor so any suggestions that would have to do with that area of study would be much appreciated. thank you :)|||Not much. I was once faced with the same problem. Actually, in the psych field you really need a Masters or doctors degree for any kind of professional career. Your best bet would probably be as an attendant in a psych ward or hospital. This would give you some good experience as well as looking good on your resume. Also, in some areas you could get a job as a Telephone suicide prevention counselor.

If at all possible, finish your education even if it is only one class at a time. Good luck!|||seriously an AA isnt worth a damn thing|||Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is that with only an Associate Degree, you are extremely limited in finding jobs in this field. About the only jobs that you could do would be Youth Counselor at a Camp or Children's Home, and depending on which state you live in, you might be able to work as a Behavioral Health Aide in a Day Treatment Facility/Counseling Center. You will not make very good wages either. The average starting wage for these positions is 9-11 dollars per hours, depending on experience.

A Bachelor Degree will open a few more doors, but you will still be limited. In addition to the others that are already mentioned, you could work as a Day Treatment Facilitator, Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialist (Community and Home Settings), Basic Behavioral Skills Specialist (Community and Home Settings), Mental Health Aide (Hospital, Clinics, Assisted Living Centers), or Direct Care Provider for Developmentally Disabled (Group Homes). The average starting wage for these positions ranges from 13-17, depending on experience.

A Master Degree is what it will take to make any real money in this field, because that is what is needed, along with a license, in order to provide therapy or guidance to your clients. With a Master Degree, you could become any of the following: Clinical Social Worker, Community Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist, Career Counselor, School Counselor, Rehabilitation Counselor, or Chemical Dependency Counselor. You could work in any number of locations including hospitals, schools, colleges/universities, Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers, Counseling/Psychological Centers and even open a Private Practice.|||Well, I know you can be an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapist (usually for kids with autism) without a degree at all (I did it right out of high school and am still doing it), so I'm sure your AA would help you get hired there.

I believe you could probably apply to work at a mental hospital as long as you didn't need a job very high up on the ladder. Our local mental hospital takes volunteers to do such things (I volunteered once to work in the mental hospital's library, distributing books and things to people who came in), so I think if they couldn't find volunteers they might hire you.
