Hi im an international student(female) who is coming over to philadelphia for an elective at Upenn around the period of April. I was told that most elective students choose to stay in International House due to its proximity to the campus. However, there are concerns over the high rate of crime in the area.
As I would be alone, I am naturally concerned as well..
Should I follow the advice to live in International House or should I live in the safer parts eg center city? Thanks!|||International House is on campus and as such it's safe. Just, at night, leave the campus in groups of people. As to living elsewhere, "safer" areas are expensive and you still have to get to campus.|||Yes, I think it's a safe area. Their are many apartment buildings nearby. I would be careful entering and leaving the building very late at night. University City can be subject to muggings in the wee hours. Otherwise it's a nice area to live in.|||It's not THE safest area, but it's pretty safe. U of P has a reputation to uphold and plenty of money for security. But, like anywhere, be aware of your surroundings when you're out by yourself after dark and, if possible, don't walk alone. That would apply to Center City, too.|||If you take a look at a map of the Penn campus, you can think of safety decreasing a bit in concentric circles away from "center." International House is fairly far in, and right near a fancy hotel and some shops, so it is pretty safe. As a university, Penn is obsessed with safety, since parents go crazy if there's any sort of crime on campus - seeming to forget that Philly is a pretty large US city.

Center City is also a viable place to live, but the public transportation in the city isn't ideal for commuting to school unless you'd like to spend a decent amount of time on trolleys and buses. Moreover, not many students live in Center City, and you might miss out on events you might have gone to as a result of proximity, etc. Are you looking to get the community feel, or focusing more on education alone?

One potential 'compromise' of sorts if you don't feel comfortable with International House is to live in University City's Left Bank housing. It's substantially more expensive, but safer as well. It can be found here: http://www.leftbankapts.com/

One final thing which may (or may not) ease your mind: safety statistics on the city from a few places show fairly low violent crime in the area of International House; there's generally more theft, etc. in those areas.
